Chapter Seventeen

H arper stayed at the bookstore until closing time. She ate a muffin for dinner and fed Einstein his regular meal, thanks to her on-site storage of all things belonging to him. As she locked up behind Julie, she wondered why Einstein had food and beds wherever he went, and she had settled for a muffin and coffee for dinner.

Later at home, Harper fell asleep reading her murder mystery, and the next thing she knew, Einstein was nudging her hand with his cool nose.

“Oh, was I snoring? What time is it?” she said, stretching.

Checking her phone on the nightstand, she had to blink a few times. It was nearly nine; she had slept late. A memory filtered back into her mind now as she dressed. Was it the scent of roses she smelled again in the house last night when she’d come home or was she dreaming about roses?

Harper threw on her robe and went to the kitchen. She opened the curtains and pushed the button on the coffee maker.

“First things first, Einstein.” She opened the kitchen door, so he could go into the backyard alone.

“Come back when you’re done,” she called when he padded off. “I need coffee.”

Today was Wednesday, Harper’s day off from the bookstore, the day Julie could work all day, and Josh could relieve her as needed. She planned to read the witch book that Maura had entrusted to her and to look through Hazel’s recipe files for something to cook for John on Friday night. She also wanted to get back to Hazel’s journals and maybe get into the other boxes. They looked promising, full of papers, photo albums, and notebooks.

Whether it was the jolt of cold air outside that woke up her brain when she went out to call Einstein in or that her brain had needed time to process everything from the day before, she didn’t know. But the cobwebs suddenly cleared. One thought came to the surface now, the big question left unasked during her meeting with Maura and Maeve. Who would know about this grimoire or spell outside the families?

Who would have any reason to think Hazel had it in her possession? She smacked herself on the forehead. “Now that’s pretty important to know, I’d think, and why did they not bring that up, Einstein?”

Einstein, who was now ready to go back inside, looked up as if to say, “Don’t ask me.” They both hurried inside as a strong gust of wind pushed the brown leaves along the yard. Once inside, Harper picked up her phone and texted that question to Maeve.

The coffee finally ready, Harper sat at the table waiting for her text alert and eating a bowl of cereal with banana slices. After putting her bowl in the dishwasher, she paced around the kitchen, picking things up and putting them down, too anxious to sit still. Nothing, no text. Einstein munched his breakfast with vigor and ignored her restless energy.

An hour later, Maeve finally texted back: Let’s talk tomorrow, but yes, a few might know about the book besides the family, and someone must have it.
